A mini travel guide to explore the Costa Brava like a local

13 november 2022

This Costa Brava travel guide is for everyone, whether you already know this place or have yet to discover it. Known for its typical, picturesque villages, wild coves with turquoise waters, vineyards, and museums, the Catalan coast is a gem that you must experience – especially in the summer season. Explore everything it has to offer with this personal mini Costa Brava travel guide. Find recommendations on where to stay, eat, drink, swim, and hike

Explore the coastal towns of Baix Empordà.

I recommend exploring the coastal towns of Baix Empordà, such as Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, and Begur. One of the highlights of Begur is their coastal path called Camí de Ronda. The coastal trail is approximately 20 km long, but it is divided into 4 segmented parts. My favorite section is the route from El Golfet to Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc. Bring your swimwear and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of El Golfet. We suggest going early to avoid the heat and crowds, allowing you to savor a peaceful moment. Finish your journey in the coastal town of Calella de Palafrugell, as it is truly a magical place with its picturesque houses. I always enjoy visiting ‘El Far de Sant Sebastià’ because the views are simply incredible. Indulge in a delightful meal at the renowned restaurant Far Nomo, a place where fine dining and beautiful interiors come together. Try to dine on the terrace; it feels like being in a fairy tale surrounded by trees, flowers, and evening lights.

Wander around in Begur

I suggest taking an evening stroll in the town of Begur. This town is known for its South American influences and features many buildings reminiscent of Cuba. While you’re here, you don’t want to miss Restaurant Clara. It is located in the heart of Begur. Coming as strangers and leaving as friends would be the best way to describe Clara Restaurant. The variety of food is fantastic for those who want to taste a wide range of dishes. And with each dish, you experience that wow factor. From traditional tapas like croquettes and tortilla de bacalao to fancy tapas like oysters in ponzu sauce, none disappointed us

Get lost in the medieval towns of Baix Empordà

What I love about the Costa Brava are the magical coastal towns, but if you drive a bit inland, you’ll experience beautiful medieval towns. The best way to explore the area is by driving at your own pace and stopping wherever catches your attention. I recommend two of the most beautiful towns and villages of the Costa Brava, although the list could be much longer. Monells is a ‘must-see’ town where cars are not allowed. It is a small and quiet cobblestone village surrounded by stone farmhouses. Enjoy a drink in the square. That being said, I recommend driving to Peratallada. The locals love to dine out, as evidenced by the large number of restaurants you can find in this town.

Explore the highlights of Alt Empordà

Now that you’ve explored the beautiful region of ‘Baix Empordà,’ we recommend not forgetting about ‘Alt Empordà.’ Personally, I love strolling through L’Escala and stopping at each small beach that this coastal town offers. However, this place is particularly known for the beautiful restaurant Ultramar. This bar/restaurant has secured a place in the hearts of many visitors to L’Escala, many of whom return for another round of the best cocktails accompanied by great music. Ultramar serves as a cocktail bar, restaurant, and jazz club, making it the perfect place to enjoy your evening in L’Escala. They also have a chiringuito in Pals. It’s a beach bar with fresh products, cocktails, natural juices, a space with sunbeds, chill-outs, and DJ sessions. There’s almost nothing better than enjoying delicious food on the beach while watching the waves and soaking in the sun.

Discover Catalan culture through the art of wine.

For all my fellow wine enthusiasts, the best way to learn about Catalan wine-making is through a guided tour and a subsequent wine tasting. Our favorite vineyard is Terra Remota. Nestled in the heart of Empordà in the wild north of the Costa Brava, Terra Remota translates the concept of Agriturismo into the world of wines. And while you’re here, be sure to opt for the picnic experience. They prepare a picnic basket with a bottle of wine and various local products (ham, cheese, fuet sausage, pâté, bread, tomato, oil, fruit, and coffee), allowing you to enjoy it amidst the vineyards.

Discover the rich artistic heritage in Cadaqués

One of the most impressive towns on the Costa Brava is undoubtedly Cadaqués. Even though it can get busy in the summer, you’ll notice how peaceful it is. With every breathtaking corner and the beautiful shimmering of the Mediterranean Sea, you understand why artists like Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and the infamous Dalí were drawn to it! This place has everything you could wish for to enjoy a perfect summer – fantastic beaches, coastal walks, and, of course, Dalí’s house nearby.

Located in Portlligat, you can visit the museum-house of the painter Salvador Dalí. The painter lived and worked here from 1930 to 1982. Upon entering the first part of the house, you step into the cottage that Salvador bought first and turned into a simple studio and residence. The house comprises different spaces: the area where the couple’s private life took place, the ground floor, the study, several rooms with many objects related to his artistic activity, and the outdoor spaces. Visit this place to learn more about his personal life.

Last but not least, drive to Cap de Creus. It is a cape near Cadaqués that is particularly known as a source of inspiration for Dalí. Our favorite restaurant is atop the nature reserve and is called Restaurant Cap de Creus. Here, you have a fantastic view and can enjoy delicious food. It’s a long drive through the mountains, but the view makes it all worthwhile.
