1.1 Where is the market in Begur?
The village of Begur is small but effective. Here, you’ll find plenty of charming restaurants, shops, and a weekly market on the square. Make room for all the freshly bought fruits and vegetables. The market takes place on Wednesdays between 08:00 and 14:00.
2. A day at the beach in one of the coves in Begur.
Begur is renowned for its many beautiful coves just a stone’s throw away. These coves are also known as ‘calas.’ They are not large, wide beaches as you might be used to, but rather small, often rocky, bays where you can enjoy a beautiful setting. Due to their smaller size, you’ll find that the beaches have wonderfully soft sand, and the sea is crystal clear. Here are the beaches near Begur:
- Platja Fonda
- Aiguablava (a must-visit)
- Platja Sa Riera
- Cala Sa Tuna
- Cala de Fornells
- Platja Illa Roja
- Platja del Racó (this beach features a fantastic chiringuito)
- Platja Aiguafreda
3. Attend the Fira d’Indians event
Begur is considered one of the most charming villages on the Costa Brava. While exploring, you will undoubtedly come across many colonial houses, and at times, you might mistake it for Cuba rather than Spain. Why is that? Begur has a special connection with Cuba.
In the 19th century, some residents of Begur decided to emigrate to America. At that time, Cuba had become the largest sugar producer and was therefore an attractive place to stay. However, when Cuba gained independence, these Catalan entrepreneurs returned, and they are now known as ‘Indianos.’
This special connection between Cuba and Begur is still celebrated with the ‘Fira d’Indians’ event at the beginning of September. What can you expect from this event? The people of Begur, elegantly dressed in Caribbean white robes, Cuban music, exhibitions, and tastings of mojitos and piña coladas. This event commemorates the close ties with the island of Cuba and celebrates the return of those who had departed.
4. Enjoy a cocktail on the rooftop terrace in Begur
At a stunning location, right in the center, there is a rooftop terrace with 360-degree views over Begur. Here, you can watch the evening sun set, enjoy delicious cocktails, and stylishly conclude your evening. At the top of the beautiful Alta House hotel, they offer a wide range of mixed drinks, refreshing dry martinis, and margaritas. They can also surprise you and introduce you to new sensations with their own creations. So, plenty of choices! If you prefer wine, that’s, of course, not a problem either.
5. Begin your Camí de Ronda (walk in Begur)
In Begur, you can enjoy beautiful walks along the coastline thanks to the paths known as Camí de Ronda. This is a well-known walk, stretching for a whopping 200 kilometers. Lace up your walking shoes as a first step! This walk holds historical significance as it was once used to prevent smuggling by sailors. Nowadays, these paths serve as access points to various coves, allowing you to experience the true beauty of the Costa Brava. Begur offers three different routes, namely:
- Cami de Ronda Norte
- Cami de Ronda Este
- Cami de Ronda Sud
